Mechanism of Action

Olfactory input affects food intake in several important ways, influencing the onset of eating, the choice of food eaten at a meal, and the cessation of eating at the end of a meal. In addition to decreasing caloric intake by reducing olfactory function, an olfactory block will modify mechanisms involved in initiating and terminating meals.
